The Myken community sits among low skerries far out in the open sea, on the outer edge of the Norwegian coast. There is no car traffic here, and the road is only 800 metres long. At one end of it is Myken Seng og Suppe. In the old school building, drilling and strict instructions have been replaced by overnight stays and set tables.

Sleep

Myken Seng og Suppe lives up to its name — and more. Guests stay well, close to the local meeting place and the restaurant.

One option is a vintage caravan for two, set inside the old school library. Each caravan is individually designed and has its own “outdoor area”, with deck chairs, palm trees and colourful lights.

Other places to stay at Myken Seng og Suppe include the former staff room, chemistry lab and school kitchen — all converted into comfortable double rooms.

Skolen Seng og Suppe offers other options as well. The Teachers’ Lounge, Chemistry Lab and School Kitchen, have all been converted into comfortable double rooms. There are shared bathrooms.

Eat

In the restaurant, set in the old gym hall, guests are served homemade food in generous portions. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee are all included. The menu varies with the supply of local ingredients. After the meal, guests can relax, chat with locals, and take in what people here call — simply — the world’s most beautiful view.

Myken Seng og Suppe also serves the fine drops distilled at the island’s own whisky distillery.

About Myken

Myken shows that coastal communities can still thrive, even where other places are being depopulated and fading away. It lies so far out at sea that you barely catch sight of it, even when the Hurtigruten passes close to the shoreline. The nearest neighbour is 40 minutes away by high-speed boat.

Its location, whisky distillery, attractive places to stay and restaurant have made Myken popular. At the same time, the remote and slightly out-of-the-way setting means it never feels crowded in this beautiful place, which is home to a small year-round community.

Check route with Entur

The easiest way to Myken is with the summer route to Nordlandsekspressen, which operates on the Helgeland coast from about 20 June until about 20 August.

Otherwise this year you can take the Nordland Express from Bodø or Sandnessjøen to Tonnes. There you change to the boat that serves Rødøyruta to Myken. There is also free parking at Tonnes.

Welcome to Myken

When you step off the boat at Myken, you feel your pulse calming down. Further out to sea, it’s hardly possible to reach Helgeland. But 32 kilometers from the mainland, north of the Arctic Circle, there is a small community on a tiny island, where a handful of enthusiasts keep the lights on in the houses and the doors open.
