The course emphasizes safety and provides comprehensive training on equipment and essential kayaking techniques. You’ll learn how to maneuver forwards and backwards, execute precise turns, and re-enter your kayak if you capsize. Additionally, you’ll master navigating currents, managing eddies, negotiating stream divides, tackling waves, and much more.

The rivers around Trofors are among Norway’s premier whitewater kayaking destinations. RiverNorth is led by Mariann Sæther, a world champion and several-time Norwegian champion in whitewater kayaking. This is a unique opportunity to learn from the best, in some of the best conditions for whitewater kayaking.

The course lasts two days, with about 5-6 hours of instruction and paddling each day.

The course includes the rental of all paddling equipment, such as a wetsuit, kayak, life jacket, and helmet.

You will need to bring your own towel, food and drinks, woolen underwear, and thin wool socks to wear under the wetsuit.

RiverNorth offers courses from June to the end of September, depending on river water levels.

RiverNorth is based in Trofors, about a 45-minute drive south of Mosjøen. We recommend traveling by car to Trofors, but it is also accessible by train.

  • Strive to leave no trace of your visit. Bring back all your rubbish, including used toilet paper, and discard it in the nearest rubbish bin.
  • Plan your toilet visits and use the opportunity when you pass a toilet. In the wilderness, make sure you are not a nuisance to others.
  • Respect the local wildlife. Keep a good distance from wildlife, livestock and birds. Keep your dog leashed.
  • Respect private property. Keep a respectful distance from houses and cabins.
  • Show good boating sense. Keep a good distance from shore and drive at a low speed, especially when you are close to anyone or anything on the water, including birds or animals. Avoid loud and disturbing engine noise. Be aware that some islands and nature reserves are important nesting sites, and that going ashore is prohibited during the nesting season.
  • Follow the Norwegian Mountain Code (Fjellvettreglene). Plan your excursion according to the weather forecast, your skills and experience.
  • Join a guided excursion or consider hiring an experienced guide, especially when you don’t have sufficient experience or knowledge to guarantee a safe trip.
