On the island of Myken, far out at sea, you’ll find a small shop with big importance. Myken Handel is more than a grocery store – it’s a natural meeting place for locals and visitors alike, located just a stone’s throw from the express boat dock.

Take a seat in the shop’s coffee corner, where coffee is served daily, along with ice cream or other treats from the shelves. It’s a great place to chat with locals, knit a patch for the quilt being raffled by the Myken Community Association, or simply enjoy the calm and cosy atmosphere. Waffles or a simple lunch dish are often served – always with a warm smile on the side.

The shop has a good selection of food and beverages, and offers everything you need during your stay – whether you’re here for the day or staying a week. There’s no need to bring groceries with you. The staff know both the island and its guests well and are happy to help – even if the express boat arrives after closing time.

Myken is an archipelago far out at sea in the municipality of Rødøy, located in the northern part of the Helgeland coast. The archipelago is situated north of Træna and west of the island Rødøy. You can travel to Myken by express boat or private boat. Please note that the boat does not run frequently, so you should plan to stay overnight.

Express boat
Only during summer:
The summer route of the Nordlandsekspressen goes to Myken from several stops between Bodø and Rødøy in the north, and between Sandnessjøen and Træna in the south. Click on the names to see the express boat docks on Google Maps.

Year round: For the rest of the year, you must take the express boat from Tonnes in the south or Vågaholmen in the north. Both routes pass through Rødøy and the other islands in the municipality. It is possible to take the express boat from Sandnessjøen to Tonnes via Onøy, and from Bodø to Rødøy, and then transfer to the express boat to Myken there. Click on the names to see the express boat docks on Google Maps.

Keep in mind that you’ll need separate tickets if you’re taking two different boats to reach Myken—for instance, if you travel by express boat to Rødøy and then transfer to a local express boat to Myken. You can contact Boreal for assistance with booking connecting tickets at sentrumsterminalen.bsjo@boreal.no.

Thank you for respecting the local communities, and for helping us preserve the natural beauty of Helgeland!

Please:

  • Strive to leave no trace of your visit. Bring back all your rubbish, including used toilet paper, and discard it in the nearest rubbish bin.
  • Plan your toilet visits and use the opportunity when you pass a toilet. In the wilderness, make sure you are not a nuisance to others.
  • Respect the local wildlife. Keep a good distance from wildlife, livestock and birds. Keep your dog leashed.
  • Respect private property. Keep a respectful distance from houses and cabins.
  • Show good boating sense. Keep a good distance from shore and drive at a low speed, especially when you are close to anyone or anything on the water, including birds or animals. Avoid loud and disturbing engine noise. Be aware that some islands and nature reserves are important nesting sites, and that going ashore is prohibited during the nesting season.
  • Follow the Norwegian Mountain Code (Fjellvettreglene). Plan your excursion according to the weather forecast, your skills and experience.
  • Join a guided excursion or consider hiring an experienced guide, especially when you don’t have sufficient experience or knowledge to guarantee a safe trip.

Welcome to Myken

When you step off the boat at Myken, you feel your pulse calming down. Further out to sea, it’s hardly possible to reach Helgeland. But 32 kilometers from the mainland, north of the Arctic Circle, there is a small community on a tiny island, where a handful of enthusiasts keep the lights on in the houses and the doors open.
