Travel description

This one- to two-day cycling tour includes a ferry ride, an express boat trip, and possibly a bus ride. There are no public toilets along the route except on the ferry and express boat.

In Mosjøen, you can rent bikes from Herøy Kajakk og Sykkel, located at Fru Haugans Hotel. The bikes can be rented for multiple days, making it easy to turn the trip into an overnight adventure.

The trip begins with ferry number 18-211 from Mosjøen ferry terminal to Hundåla — a crossing of about 55 minutes. Ferry departure times from Mosjøen are available [here].

From Hundåla, a 22 km bike ride awaits. You’ll follow County Road 146 to Husvika. In Husvika, you can camp in the open countryside (at least 150 metres from the nearest house or cabin), or you can take the next express boat from Husvika to Tjøtta — just be sure to plan carefully around the boat schedules.

From Husvika, express boats run to both Tjøtta and Forvik. [See the boat schedules here].
If you take the boat to Forvik, you’ll need to continue by express boat or ferry to Tjøtta.

From Tjøtta pier, it’s 40 km to Sandnessjøen. You can either cycle this stretch or take a bus that aligns with the express boat’s arrival. In that case, take bus 23-704, a trip of about 45 minutes.

Thank you for respecting the local communities, and for helping us preserve the natural beauty of Helgeland!

Please:

  • Strive to leave no trace of your visit. Bring back all your rubbish, including used toilet paper, and discard it in the nearest rubbish bin.
  • Plan your toilet visits and use the opportunity when you pass a toilet. In the wilderness, make sure you are not a nuisance to others.
  • Respect the local wildlife. Keep a good distance from wildlife, livestock and birds. Keep your dog leashed.
  • Respect private property. Keep a respectful distance from houses and cabins.
  • Show good boating sense. Keep a good distance from shore and drive at a low speed, especially when you are close to anyone or anything on the water, including birds or animals. Avoid loud and disturbing engine noise. Be aware that some islands and nature reserves are important nesting sites, and that going ashore is prohibited during the nesting season.
  • Follow the Norwegian Mountain Code (Fjellvettreglene). Plan your excursion according to the weather forecast, your skills and experience.
  • Join a guided excursion or consider hiring an experienced guide, especially when you don’t have sufficient experience or knowledge to guarantee a safe trip.
