Helgeland is well connected by air, road and sea, with a range of transport options linking the region to the rest of Norway. Whether travelling by plane, car, train, coastal voyage or express boat, there’s many ways of getting here – with several routes offering scenic journeys along one of Norway’s most diverse coastlines.

Helgeland is easily accessible via Bodø and Trondheim, which serve as the main transport hubs for the region, along with the smaller local airports in the major towns of Helgeland. From here, visitors can travel onwards by air, train, road or sea.

All of the major towns in Helgeland have their own airport with direct flights from Oslo, Trondheim and Bodø.

In 2027, there will be a brand new large airport opening in Mo i Rana which will make even more direct flights available.

The rail road Nordlandsbanen just about follows the highway E6, and stops at basically all the same places. There are train stations in Trofors, Mosjøen, Bjerka, Mo i Rana and Dunderland. If you plan on travelling further on the Helgeland Coast, then there are busses going to Sandnessjøen and Brønnøysund from Mosjøen and Trofors, and to Nesna or Stokkvågen from Mo i Rana. From there, there are ferry connections to the rest of the Helgeland Coast.

When driving to Helgeland, you can choose between following the main road E6 or the scenic Coastal Route, also known as the National Tourist Route Helgeland Coast. The E6 extends from Oslo in the south to Kirkenes in the north and is the fastest road to Helgeland. Alternatively, you can take the Coastal Route from Steinkjer in the south to Bodø in the north. This route is considered one of the world’s most beautiful drives and is an experience in itself.

Norway and Helgeland boasts a well-developed network of charging stations equipped with fast chargers for electric vehicles, so you need not worry about driving an electric car here.

From about October to April, winter conditions are common on many roads. Driving during this period requires appropriate winter tyres, a properly equipped vehicle, and experience with winter driving. You can read more about winter driving by following the link below.

There are numerous ferries operating on the Helgeland coast, both along the scenic Coastal Route and to and from many of the larger island communities.

Some islands on the Helgeland Coast, like Vega, Dønna, and Herøy are quite big and it can therefore be a good idea to bring your car to get around. But most of the time, on islands like Rødøya and Lovund, there are very few and very narrow roads, and therefore it might be a good idea to just leave your car parked on the mainland, and travel either by foot or with a bike.

Travel trade operators can pre-book tickets for the express boats, and the Travel Pass Nordland allows unlimited travel on both express boats and buses for a fixed period, making it ideal for flexible itineraries.

Scheduled bus services connect many of the towns and villages on Helgeland, as well as key transport hubs for ferries and express boats serving the islands along the Helgeland coast. However, services are infrequent, as routes are primarily designed for local commuters travelling to and from work and school. We therefore recommend planning your journey in advance.
