Ole Edvart Rølvaag emigrated from Dønna to the USA in the late 1800s. There, he wrote several novels about emigrating from Norway and being an immigrant in the USA during that time. At the Dønna exhibition, you can learn more about the author's life and work and see the complete collection of Ole Edvart Rølvaag's first editions.
The exhibition at Dønna Library is beautifully set up with information about the author's upbringing in Dønna, his journey to the USA, and his life as an emigrant and immigrant. It provides an interesting glimpse into a time when life in Norway could be hard, while the American Dream shone brightly with the promise of land and wealth in the distance. Read More
Join the sailing trip on the beautiful Nordland boat Faragut and experience Helgeland from the sea just as people here have done since the Viking Age. The Nordland boat is an open, low, and sturdy wooden boat that has its roots all the way back to the Viking ships, and it's an experience to stand at the helm when the wind fills the sail.
To sail in an open boat, as the Vikings did, is an experience like no other. Travelling through the beautiful coastal landscapes, with the archipelago towards the open sea, and the deep, forest-clad mystical fjords, takes on a timeless perspective when done in an authentic Nordland boat.
The boats that the Faragut Association takes on trips are locally built in Bindal, by boatbuilders who carry the knowledge and expertise that has been passed down from one boatbuilder to another for hundreds of years. They are built properly, meticulously, and carefully, with respect for what a boat should withstand for a safe and pleasant journey on the ocean and fjord. When the sails are hoisted in such a boat, and the wind catches them, you can feel the entire boat come alive!
Trips with Faragut
The crew on Faragut are intimately familiar with the fjords and sea areas around Bindal, and they plan the trips based on what you feel like doing and what suits the weather and wind conditions for that day. Everyone can join the boat, whether you're 1 year old or 101 years old. Read More
