Kayaking between Herøys Islands

The municipality of Herøy, situated in the heart of the Helgeland coast, comprises about 2400 islands, islets and skerries. Naturally, this is a paradise for kayaking. The most sheltered waters are between the islets south of Herøy. Good destinations here include Brasøy and Husvær. If you wish a longer excursion, head farther south to Skogshomen. Should you yearn for more challenging conditions, face the open sea and head out to Gåsvær.

Level 1 & 2

LEVEL 1 – BEGINNER (excursions staying south of Herøy)
Level 2 – ADVANCED (routes on the western side)

Duration: Day excursions, or longer journeys with overnight stays.

  • Take the express boat to Herøy from Sandnessjøen or Vega. Alternatively take the Søvik–Flostad (Herøy) ferry, or the ferry from Sandnessjøen via Dønna.
  • Tennvalen is a good starting point for exploring the southern area. After launching your kayak, head south between Husvær and Brasøy. If you wish, you can continue south past Skålvær and Omnøy, towards Skogsholmen.
  • Experienced kayakers who prefer more open waters can start their journey at Øksningan or Seløy. Stay close to Vardøya or Måsvær before crossing the ford to Gåsvær.

Tips: You can augment your kayak excursion with an ocean adventure in a high-speed RIB boat. For details, please contact Seløy Kystferie.
