In the first weekend of December, the town of Mosjøen invites you to a warm‑hearted Christmas experience! The friendly town decorates the charming wooden houses of its historic centre with lights, and fills its streets with music and elves. Explore booths where craftsmen and merchants offer their wares, warm yourself by the fire in a lavvo, and dine on traditional Norwegian Christmas fare.
Når snøen har lagt seg finnes det knapt en finere julegate enn Sjøgata
It all starts with a Wilderness Evening on Friday, where you are invited to savour a hearty wilderness stew in a lavvo, the tent of the Sámi reindeer herders. The evening is spicy with storytelling, and dessert is served with coffee brewed over the fire.
Saturday is celebrated with a Christmas market, where stalls are filled with goods from local craftsmen, artists, farmers and food producers. It’s a great opportunity to find a unique gift for someone you love, or to treat yourself to something special. The real joy, however, is simply strolling through the historic Sjøgata street — lined with 19th‑century wooden houses — soaking up the atmosphere, visiting the gingerbread‑house exhibition, sipping a mug or two of gløgg (traditional mulled wine), or perhaps catching a movie at the outdoor cinema. Come along for a wilderness adventure in Helgeland. With the moon and perhaps the glow of the Northern Lights illuminating our way, and equipped with headlights if needed, Hi North will guide you on a magical adventure!
Sjåmoen is a recreation area at the threshold of the wilderness, situated a short distance from the town of Mosjøen. This site has been used by many generations of Sámi reindeer herders for gathering and sorting their flocks. Grateful to be away from the noise and light disturbances of the city, visitors often speak of experiencing a deep tranquillity at Sjåmoen.
Your guide will equip you with snowshoes and then we’ll go on a short trek to our destination, a nearby lavvo. This tipi-shaped tent is a portable traditional dwelling that is used by the nomadic Sámi reindeer herders. Away from the lights of the city, you will be amazed at how many stars there are. If we’re lucky, we may even see the Northern Lights dancing across the skies above! Read More
