Culinary Helgeland

Helgeland’s exciting history and culture is also reflected in our food traditions. Throughout history a large and varied selection of fish, crustaceans and marine mammals has been used for food. In addition there is baking, dairy products and meat, which have collectively given Helgeland a culinary culture with great variation. You can enjoy culinary experiences par excellence in Helgeland at exciting farm restaurants in the inland area to culinary restaurants out on the coast.

Sæterstad Gård in Varntresk in Hattfjelldal serves traditional food, most of which is produced in the farm’s own self-made wood-fired baker’s oven. Try the farm’s award-winning rakfisk, char (“the queen of the mountain”) from their own fish farm or farm-raised kid – all prepared with the utmost care. A good meal at the farm restaurant also includes cheeses produced on the farm.

On route 73 in Hattfjelldal you will find Gryteselv Fjellgård. In this pleasant dining room on the mountain farm you can enjoy delicious cuisine based on char, moose, wild sheep, reindeer or red deer, amongst other ingredients.

Just off the E6 motorway in Grane Municipality, 30 km south of Mosjøen, you will find Laksforsen Tourist Café, situated beside a waterfall that has been described as the most beautiful in Europe. The restaurant’s menu features various salmon dishes, moose and other traditional dishes. The panoramic view from the restaurant’s large windows is nothing short of spectacular.

The Restaurant Ellenstuen at the venerable Fru Haugans Hotel, located in the historic street of Sjøgata in Mosjøen, offers exquisite culinary experiences in historic surroundings. The delicious cuisine is based on stockfish from Vega, wolffish from Tomma, crispy breast of duck or Porterhouse steak, amongst other ingredients. Don’t forget to taste the famous caramel pudding! The hotel is a member of the “Arctic Menu” network. Vikgården Landhandel og Kaffebu (general store and café), a bit further along Sjøgata, serves sumptuous lunches every day made from good, local, fresh ingredients.

If you continue on the E6 motorway northwards to Mo i Rana, the restaurant NO3, located in the heart of the town centre, has a good selection for a culinary experience. Major focus on the interaction between food and drink makes the meal even more delightful. At Restaurant Søilen at Meyergården Hotell, Chef Svein Jæger Hansen reigns over the kitchen. The restaurant is a member of the “Arctic Menu” network, has great focus on local ingredients such as meat, herbs, fruit and vegetables, and promises you a great culinary experience.

In the far north of Helgeland, on the island of Rødøy, lies the venerable Klokkergården. Located right beneath and majestic and distinctive mountain Rødøyløva, the surroundings and view are irreproachable. When the food is also a real treat, your visit offers a unique experience to please both the palate and the eye.

The restaurant Spiseriet Fabelaktig is built right down on the water’s edge at Sleneset in Lurøy offering incredible views towards the islands of Lovund and Træna. In these spectacular surroundings you can savour the exquisite food prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients.

A visit to Restaurant Måken at Lovund RorbuHotel on the small, idyllic island of Lovund comes highly recommended. The restaurant has the Helgeland Coast’s larder right on its doorstep and it is utilized frequently. It is just a case of looking forward to the culinary experience of the day.

On the island of Dønna, you will discover the historic farm Dønnes Gård. Here you will be served exciting dishes based on local ingredients served with homemade bread, butter, dressings and more, all of which are made from scratch. At Bøteriet at Åkerøya, you can eat well in pleasant maritime surroundings with various fish dishes as the speciality of the house.

You can enjoy authentic Helgeland food at Margrethes Café at the Petter Dass Museum in Alstahaug. Enjoy food and exhibitions in the wonderful building designed by Norway’s best known architectural practice, Snøhetta.

A visit to Anna and Jon at Vega Havhotell on the World Heritage island of Vega comes highly recommended. The surroundings are exquisite and the homemade food is made from the finest and freshest ingredients from the sea and the land. The rich wine cellar is also a must! Vega Havhotell won the audience award at the 2012 Norway International Travel Fair.

Northern Norway’s only food, wine and herbal farm is located just off route 17, just north of Brønnøysund. All the food served at Hildurs Urterarium is based on local and self-produced ingredients, including herbs from the garden, self-produced wine, lamb from the farm, game from the forest and fish and marine animals from the sea. Hildurs Urterarium is a member of the “Arctic Menu” network and is a family restaurant that is fond of good food and has an atmosphere that is totally unique.

At Schrøders Stue restaurant at Thon Hotel Brønnøysund you can enjoy exciting local and international cuisine of high quality. Bona Mat og Vinhus in downtown Brønnøysund serves exquisite seafood dishes in intimate and pleasant surroundings.
